Meet Rambo – AKA Ram – this boy is ready to go 24/7!

High drive-sport prospect

Ram is a 4 year old (born June 27th, 2021) black and white border collie, full of energy and ready to play. Ram is a very sweet boy, but would rather be out working that sitting on the couch watching TV. He requires structured daily physical and mental enrichment to stay happy. He ABSOLUTELY LOOVES playing disc, and shows the potential to be a herding dog. He is confident, fearless, and social. Being on the petite side of border collies, he is perfect for those who want to do freestyle.

Rambo is very smart, handler focused, and willing to learn. He is very food and toy motivated and is very intense and not happy just laying around. He does eventually settle, but loves to grab all the toys and throw them at you to get you to play. Rambo would not thrive as just a pet; he needs a owner willing to work with him, teach him, play, and give plenty of enrichment.  He is a wild child. He has shown no aggression towards other dogs, though he does try to herd smaller ones. He is a chicken chaser, but his foster is working on that and he is learning to coexist with them.

Personality highlights:

  • Driven & focused- great toy/food drive
  • Fearless- no hesitation in new environments, or with new people. He doesn’t know a stranger.
  • Social- but would rather chase a toy then get pets
  • High work ethic- learns quickly and enjoys training
  • Sweet tempered
  • Crate trained-quiet and sleeps in crate
  • Handler focused- attaches to one person, but plays with anyone that has a toy or disc.

Strengths:

  • Extremely high drive & endless energy
  • Social & playful with people
  • Confident & stable in new environments
  • Crate & potty training
  • Tolerates brushing, bathing, feet touching.
  • Knows sit, lay, crate, come, name, around

Weaknesses:

  • Needs structured environment
  • Can become overstimulated around small dogs and chickens
  • Will continously throw toys at you
  • No apartment living

Training and manners:

  • Crate trained
  • Leash trained-working on loose leash manners
  • Potty trained
  • Basic commands- sit, lay, name, recall, leave it. Working on door manners and place

Sport & working potential:

  • Herding- TBD
  • Disc 9/10- catching in air and knows around
  • Agility- TBD
  • Dock diving- TBD
  • Trick dog- 7/10, learns good but enjoys running more
  • Focus & handler engagement- 9/10- very handler focused and always waiting for the next command.

Ram’s ideal home:

  • Active, and structured with plenty of mental and physical work.
  • Experience border collie or herding breed handler
  • Sport home-agility, disc, possibly herding.
  • Adult only or older children
  • Only dog household or bigger dogs
  • No cats

Not fit for:

  • Apartments or small yards
  • First time owners
  • Homes wanting only a pet/couch potato
  • Busy households w/o training structure
  • Homes with small children (not aggressive but will try to herd/nip)

Ram transitioned well coming joining his foster’s pack from the boarding facility. He is on a structured schedule; getting exercise in the early morning and evening when it isn’t hot, and training a couple times during the the day. He loves the Kong and toppl toys. He does eventually settle after working, but he never wants to stop. His foster mom is working on teaching him an “off” switch. Ram is not destructive in the home or in the yard, but he will go into the toy bin when he is bored. He is semi-affectionate, eager to please, and always ready to go.
